East Carolina University’s ITALY INTENSIVES study abroad program offers a unique, authentic international education experience in the heart of Tuscany, birthplace of the Renaissance and one of the most beautiful and culturally rich areas of the world. A variety of courses are offered in studio arts, art history, social science, humanities and Italian language, allowing students to earn 12-18 undergraduate or graduate credits during fall or spring semesters, or 3 to 6 during summer programs. Program costs are the same for in state, out-of-state or visiting students.
Certaldo Alto, our campus site, is an authentic, medieval walled city where one can easily imagine life in the middle Ages. Unspoiled by tourism, the village sits above the urban center of Certaldo Basso, a community of about 14,000. ECU classrooms are located in the Palazzo Stiozzi Ridolfi, just steps away from our beautiful student apartments, surrounded by towers, gates, fountains, prisons, Giovanni Boccaccio’s home, and gorgeous views of the Tuscan countryside. From our school and lodgings, it is a 10-minute walk to the train station and, from there, less than an hour to Florence or Siena. We are located 30 minutes from a major airport in Pisa where students can fly to locations all over Europe during free weekends or semester breaks. Study includes field trips to Rome, Siena, Florence, Venice, Pisa, Volterra, San Gimignano, Lucca and Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera.
